PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – A 300 through the final round of play pushed No. 8 Carson-Newman up three spots on the leaderboard to finish in ninth place at the Shark Invitational on Tuesday.
The Eagles were 12-over in the final 18 holes for their best round at the event. Through all three rounds, C-N was 63-over par with a 927 total. The Orange and Blue were the fifth-best Par-3 scoring team with a +20 score on such holes. The team shot a total of 28 birdies and made par for a field-low 134 holes.
Second-seed Tom Forster (Oundle, England) closed out the event at eighth with a four-over total of 220, just five shots out of first. Through the back nine on the day, the junior was two-over with a pair of bogeys on holes 15 and 16. He was two-strokes better in the front nine thanks to three birdies with a bogey and double bogey for a 74 in the final round.
Forster tied for the lead in the entire field for Par-3 scoring with a 2.92 average, going one-under on those shots. He tied for fifth one Par-4s with a five-over score and tied for the second-most birdies with 10.
Freshman Jake Mynatt (Knoxville, Tenn.) shot a second-straight round of 75 for a 231 total, 15 shots over par. The Orange and Blue's No. 3 seed, carded a couple of birdies in the final 18 with five bogeys as he tied for 35th in the field.
Senior Jake Headrick (Maryville, Tenn.), the team's top-seed, made a much-needed 14-spot jump up the leaderboard with a 10-shot improvement from the second to third round to finish with a share of 47th. He started the final round with a birdie on 10 before a double bogey, bogey and another birdie pushed him to one over heading into the turn. The front nine brought two more birdies with three bogeys for a +2 round of 74. He closed out with a 54-hole total of 236.
Fourth-seed Jackson Tyler (Wilmington, N.C.) also made an improvement in his final round to finish four shots behind Headrick in a tie for 65th. His final round of 77 gave him a 24-over total of 240. The sophomore shot six bogeys with his lone birdie on the day coming on his final hole of the event.
Anthony Marcinelli (Knoxville, Tenn.), C-N's No. 5 seed, did not play in the final round of competition, placing him at 95th.
The top-three remained the same through the final day of competition as No. 4 Saint Leo took home the team hardware with a 22-over 54-hole total of 886. Following it by six strokes was No. 6 Florida Tech, 28-over par. Keiser was close behind in third at 29-over.
On the player side, Keiser's Benjamin Bailey was the top individual at one-under. He was the only participant to finish under par, holding a total of 215. Florida Tech's Max O'Hagan and Saint Leo's Oliver Lilliedahl tied for second at one-over with a 217 score.
The Eagles now look ahead to using the winter to prepare for their spring schedule.
