ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Carson-Newman made its way to fifth on the leaderboard before the first day of play was suspended due to darkness with just a few holes left to play in the second round on Monday.
The second round will resume on Tuesday morning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
"Discouraging start to the spring season for the Eagles," Carson-Newman coach Randy Wylie said. "I thought we were better prepared. I need to do a better job. We need a strong bounce back tomorrow with this unfinished business."
As a team, the Eagles shot 299 in the first round to open the tournament. By the time the second round was halted, C-N was at a 10-over round of 213 for a 512 total.
So far, C-N is the best par-4 scoring team with a +15 average of 4.25 on such holes and shooting for par on 67 holes with 14 birdies.
Anthony Marcinelli (Knoxville, Tenn.) held a 77 heading into the afternoon where he was able to narrow his score to even through 15 holes of the second round, enough to sit in a tie for 16th with a 136. With two bogeys and birdies, the senior was even after the first nine holes before carding a pair of double bogeys and a bogey to bring his opening round score to five-over. In the evening, he shot two birdies and two birdies before play was suspended to stay even for the round.
Tom Forster (Oundle, England) opened his spring with a four-over morning round on Monday before shooting two-over through the first seven holes of the second round. The junior fired off just two birdies in the opening round with a double bogey and four bogeys. Through the first seven holes of the second round, he had compiled a +2 score before the round was adjourned with a birdie, bogey and double bogey, all pushing him into a tie for 19th at six-over.
Sophomore Jackson Tyler (Wilmington, N.C.) and freshman Jake Mynatt (Knoxville, Tenn.) were tied at 22nd by the end of Monday.
Tyler started his day at three-over after the first round but had worked up to a four-over stance 15 holes into the second round with a 140 total. Heading into his ninth hole of the day at two-under with two birdies, a double-bogey brought him back even by hole 10. From there, he shot for birdie just once more with four more bogeys to give him a 75 in the first round. In the later round, he added on four bogeys with a double bogey and two more birdies.
By the end of the first round, Mynatt led the Eagles with a team-best even 72 score. He started the day with a birdie sandwiched by a bogey and triple bogey. From there, he cleaned up his opening round with three birdies through the next 13 holes. The second round was not as kind, send off seven bogeys and a double bogey with a pair of birdies for a seven-over score with four holes remaining in the round.
Like the team's leader for the event, Jake Headrick (Maryville, Tenn.) was also four-over heading into the afternoon after splitting the course at two-over in the morning. He saw just one birdie in the first round while shooting for bogey on five other holes. The senior had shot another four-over showing with four holes remaining before play was paused.
Fintan McKenna (Aberdeen, Scotland), playing as an individual, was on par for the most holes in the first round for all C-N participants with 12. Outside of that, he shot three birdies with a pair of bogeys before a double bogey moved him to one-over for the first 18 holes. Through 16 holes in the later round, he had shot seven strokes higher than his opening round with six bogeys and a pair of bogeys and birdies. The junior held a share of 36th with a 145 score, nine shots over par.
Tied with McKenna is Will Collins (Knoxville, Tenn.), playing as an individual for the second time this season. He scored a 79 in the first round at seven over and was two over by his 16th hole of the second. In the morning portion, he was on par for three holes out the gate but followed that string with a double bogey. Three bogeys, two birdies and a double bogey filled his scorecard in the first round before adding five bogeys with three birdies in the second.
Zach Young (Crossville, Tenn.) saw the most struggles through the first round for the Orange and Blue, carding a 16-over score of 88 in the morning round before going five-over through the first 14 holes of the second. He heads into the remainder of the second round in a tie for 98th. The freshman, making his A-team debut as an individual, shot just one birdie with five bogeys, four double bogeys and a triple bogey on 11 in the first round. He added on two double bogeys, three bogeys and a pair of birdies in the second before play came to a stop.
Queens is the top team in the field heading into Tuesday at seven over with a 498. Nine shots behind the Royals are host team No. 16 Lincoln Memorial in second followed by a tie for third from Barton and Palm Beach Atlantic.
On the individual side, Queens' Jonathan Noble is the top golfer at four-under. Two shots behind him in a tie for second is Coker's Wanjoo Lee and Barton's Justin Plane.
