Forster's seven-under day moves No. 19 C-N to fourth at Southern Tide Classic

GREENVILLE, S.C. – A 10-stroke improvement from the first to second round matched with Tom Forster leading the team with a seven-under performance propelled No. 19 Carson-Newman to fourth-place on the leaderboard to close out Monday at the Southern Tide Classic.

The Eagles were two-over by the end of the second round with a 570 total. They started the day with a 290 that landed them at sixth but worked back to a 280 in the second half of the day. They are 20 shots out of the lead heading into Tuesday's final round.

"Tom and Jackson (Tyler) played well. The rest of the team needs to keep working hard and improving," Carson-Newman coach Randy Wylie said. "We have a chance tomorrow for a really solid finish. It's just a matter of limiting our double bogeys, which have plagued us, and being a really mentally tough."

Forster (Northamptonshire, England) had a strong outing in the first day that left him just one shot out of first, tied for second at seven-under. He fired a four-under round of 67 to open the day, matching his season-low score and tying him for first through the first 18 holes. In the second round, the junior shot just one stroke higher with a 68, bringing his two-round total to 135.

Forster was the best par 5 scorer in the field through the first two rounds with a six-under average of 4.25 on such holes. He also shot two-under on par 4 holes, tying for fifth-best on those holes. He carded 13 birdies through the first day, as well, tying him for second-most in the field.

Also landing under par through the first two rounds was Jackson Tyler (Wilmington, N.C.) with a one-under position that landed him tied for 11th. The sophomore shot a 72 in the morning that tied him for 21st before making a three-stroke turnaround in the afternoon with a 69, his second-lowest round score of the season. He heads into Tuesday with a 141 total.

Tyler was one-under on par 4 holes and two-under on par 5s while shooting for birdie eight times in the opening day.

Jake Headrick (Maryville, Tenn.) sits in a tie for 39th after a five-over outing through the first two rounds for a 147 total. The senior carded a four-over 75 in the first round but answered that by firing a 72 in the latter part of the day. Through both rounds, he totaled nine birdies.

Like Headrick, Jake Mynatt (Knoxville, Tenn.) also fired a 147 on Monday to be a part of the tie for 39th. The freshman held a share of 48th by the end of the morning round after shooting a 76. He was five shots better in the afternoon, shooting an even 71 to move nine spots up the leaderboard.

Mynatt also tied for the third-best average on par 5 holes with a 4.63, three-under for those chances, while also carding eight birdies on that day.

Will Collins (Knoxville, Tenn.) tied for 51st by the end of Monday with an eight-over two-round score of 150. After shooting a 76 in the first round, he improved by two shots in the afternoon with a 74 but still fell three spots down the leaderboard. The freshman fired the most par shots out of all C-N participants at 24.

No. 16 Lincoln Memorial leads the field with a substantial 13-shot difference at 18-under. Coker is second at five-under with Queens rounding out the top three at four-under.

On the individual leaderboard, LMU's Luke Haries sits at the top with a eight-under total of 134. Tied with Forster at second is LMU's Dan Bradbury.

The tournament comes to a close after one final round on Tuesday beginning at 8:30 a.m. from the Green Valley Country Club. A recap with full results will be posted at the conclusion of the round.
