LENOIR CITY, Tenn. – Three Eagles landed in the top-10 of the field as No. 15/15 Carson-Newman cemented its best 36-hole score in five appearances at the Tennessee River Rumble with a 585 total that was good enough for a second-place finish at the Tennessee River Rumble on Tuesday.
The Eagles were seven-shots better in the second round with a one-over round thanks to improvements from four players, moving them to nine-over through the event, five shots back of first. They closed the regular season with five top-three finishes in-a-row.
"I was very pleased by some round today from our team," Carson-Newman coach Randy Wylie said. "Now it's time to step it up in the postseason. I think today set us up nicely for the South Atlantic Conference championship two weeks from now."
Jake Headrick (Maryville, Tenn.) notched his best two-round score in the event in his career and during the season with a 142, landing him in a tie for fourth. He was on par for eight of the first nine holes he faced to sit at one-under heading into the turn. The back nine was not as kind as he carded four bogeys with just two birdies to go one-over for the round.
The senior was three under on par-5 holes, tying for the top spot in the field on such holes with a three-under average. His five birdies through the tournament also tied for the most in the tournament.
"Pleased to see that Jake Headrick had a nice finish in his final regular season tournament," Wylie said. "He's been a great team leader for us throughout his excellent C-N career."
Two shots behind Headrick was Tom Forster (Northamptonshire, England) in a tie for eighth with an even 144, also his best two-round outing in the event through three appearances. He opened the day at two-under through the front nine with a bogey, birdie and an eagle on the par-5 fifth hole. The junior tacked on a pair of additional birdies and a bogey in the back nine to go three-under for the round. He was six-shots better on Tuesday compared to his 75 on Monday.
Will Collins (Knoxville, Tenn.), playing as an individual, also had a better day in the second round, making a five-stroke improvement that pushed him into a tie for 10th with a one-over 144. The freshman was even for par through the first nine holes of the round with a pair of birdies and bogeys. He shot for par on seven-straight holes through his final nine before closing the day on back-to-back birdies for a two-under 70.
Collins also sat for the top-spot in the field on par-5s with a 4.25 average.
Trailing by four shots in a tie for 26th was Jake Mynatt (Knoxville, Tenn.) with a five-over total at 149. He was one shot higher on Tuesday with a three-over 75. The freshman carded five birdies on the day but they were overshadowed by four bogeys and a pair of double bogeys.
Also scoring the best 36-hole total of his season was Anthony Marcinelli (Knoxville, Tenn.) with an eight-over 152 that was good enough for a share of 39th. The senior shot four bogeys and birdies but a double bogey on the par-3 17 elevated him to two-over on the day with a 74. He was four-shots better in the second round after carding a 78 on Monday.
Jackson Tyler (Wilmington, N.C.) had the best turnaround of Wylie's group on Tuesday thanks to a 73 in the final round, six shots better than where he left the course on Monday. He landed in a tie for 61st with an 11-over 155, still his best 36-hole score of the season. The sophomore opened his day with a birdie on the par-3 fourth hole but added on another birdie with three bogeys to go one-over on the day.
Carson-Newman went wire-to-wire as the best par-5 scoring team in the field at eight-under while tying for the most birdies at 13.
Host team No. 8/11 Lincoln Memorial won the event at four-over with a 580. Two shots behind C-N was No. 11/13 Young Harris with a 587 to round out the top-three.
LMU's Harry Boyle was the top medalist with a nine-under showing at 135. Four strokes behind him for second was King's Robert Wilkinson while Queens' Jonathan Noble was third at three-under.
The Eagles now take a week off to prepare to defend their back-to-back South Atlantic Conference championship crowns. They will head to Camden, S.C. for the three-day tournament at the Camden Country Club beginning on April 14.
