Par-5 shooting helps No. 14/15 C-N move up to sixth at SAC Championship

CAMDEN, S.C. – Despite shooting four strokes higher in the second round compared to its opening round, No. 14/15 Carson-Newman moved up two spots on the leaderboard to sixth on Monday at the South Atlantic Conference Championship.

On the day, the Eagles were the best par-5 scoring team with a six-under clip at 4.60, now sitting tied for third in the event with a two-round average of 4.73. They scored the second-most birdies in the round at 10.

They carded a 21-over round of 301 on Monday to push their 36-hole total to 38-over with a 598. 

"We somehow managed to shoot worse than yesterday," Carson-Newman coach Randy Wylie said. "We have to figure out a better strategy for this difficult golf course. No one on the team has played up to their abilities and I have not coached up to mine. We had good practice after the round, and I feel like we will play much better tomorrow."

Tom Forster (Northamptonshire, England) led the team for a second-straight round, this time shooting a four-over 74 to 12th. He was two shots higher on Monday compared to his opening round. The junior was evening heading into the turn, the best performance through the front nine among his Orange and Blue counterparts. Through the back nine, he carded a pair of bogeys and a double bogey on the par-4 18th, pushing his two-round total to 146.

Through two rounds, Forster is tied for third on Par-3 scoring with a +1 clip of 3.10.

The biggest drop in scoring on the day came from Jake Mynatt (Knoxville Tenn.), who was five-shots higher than his opening round score with a 77 on Monday. His seven-over day was enough to hold a share of 21st. His score through the first nine holes was mainly affected by a double bogey on the par-3 sixth-hole, leaving him at two-over at the midpoint of his day. The freshman's round came to a close with five-straight bogeys, giving him a 149 through 36 holes.

Jake Headrick (Maryville, Tenn.) made a two-shot improvement in the round, using a five-over day to move into a tie for 30th. The senior carded six bogeys on the day with a double bogey and three birdies. Compared to Sunday, he was one-stroke better through each half of the course on Monday. He is now 12-over for the event with a 152.

One stroke behind Headrick after the second round was Jackson Tyler (Wilmington, N.C.) with a seven-over showing that moved him into a tie for 34th with a 153 total. He was one-over in the front nine with a birdie and a pair of bogeys. The back nine resulted in the highest score of all Eagles in the round at six-over due to four bogeys and a double bogey.

The biggest improvement of the day among C-N players came from Will Collins (Knoxville, Tenn.) who was four-shots better on Monday with a five-over round of 75. He is now 14-over for the event at 154, placing him alone at 38th. The freshman's first seven holes of the day included three bogeys with a double bogey and birdie. To go four-over in the front nine. He added on a pair of birdies in the back nine to alleviate an additional bogey and double bogey.

Newberry still leads the way after a 295 on Monday, moving its two-round total to a 13-over 573. Three shots behind the Wolves are the Royals of Queens while Coker sits at third with a 26-over total.

Harry Bolton of Newberry remains at the top of the player leaderboard after a 73 in the second round, now at one-under for the tournament with a 139. Lenoir-Rhyne's Dawson Walker, Newberry's Adrian Villiger and Queens' Henry Bryden are all tied for second even with par.

The tournament concludes tomorrow with one more round of play. Carson-Newman is slated to start its day at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring will once again be available to fans with updates coming after every three holes.
