COLUMBUS, Ga. – Alex Hodge (Knoxville, Tenn.) was one shot shy of scoring in the red for a third-straight round through Tuesday, tying for fourth at the Cougar Invitational presented by Aflac while No. 18 Carson-Newman finishes 14th.
The junior left his first event with the Eagles with a four-under 209. His 54-hole total marks the fourth-best 54-hole score among current Eagles.
"Very good tournament for Alex Hodge," Carson-Newman coach Randy Wylie said. "As a team, we really struggled. Hopefully we will put this behind us quickly and be ready for North Georgia next week."
Carson-Newman was 19-over in the tournament with an 871 after a seven-over Tuesday. It tied the top of the par shots in the field with 177 shots with a field-high four eagles.
Hodge carded a trio of birdies and bogeys in the final round. He closed out the event with the third-best showing on par-4 holes at 3-under.
Nine shots behind Hodge was Fintan McKenna (Aberdeen, Scotland), tied for 34th at five-over. The senior was in the red for the first time this week with a 70, tying his lowest single round score in his career. His final round was highlighted by his second eagle of the week on the par-5 17th. He was one of four players to shoot two eagles in the tournament.
McKenna was seven-under on par-5 holes, a clip that tied him for second in the field on such holes.
For a second-straight round, Jake Mynatt (Knoxville, Tenn.) carded a four-over 75, pushing his three-day total to an eight-over 221 that placed him in a tie for 51st. He carded a single birdie in the final round but his score was pushed up with a pair of bogeys and a triple-bogey on the par-4 18th.
After back-to-back rounds of 74 on Monday, Tom Forster (Oundle, England) was one shot higher in his final round, giving him a share of 70th with a 226. The senior was five-over on Tuesday with one birdie, four bogeys and a double-bogey.
Four shots behind Forster was Fergus Robinson (Towcester, England), tied for 86th at 17-over. The junior had two birdies early in his round but they were overshadowed by four bogeys and a double-bogey.
Georgia Southwestern and No. 4 Florida Southern tied for the top spot in the field at four-under, forcing a tiebreaker to determine the winner. The victor ended up being Georgia Southwestern, winning on the first playoff hole they competed on. No. 1 Lynn took third at three-under. They were the only three teams to finish under par.
Georgia Southwestern's Vincent Norrman was the top medalist with a seven-under outing through 54 holes. Delta State's Zach Zediker and Columbus State's Jordan Doull tied for second at seven-under.
The Eagles head back to the Peach State in just a few days for the North Georgia Fall Invitational. That two-day event begins on Monday, September 30 in Dahlonega, Ga.
