Short trip to Sevierville scheduled for Carson-Newman

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - After recording their second straight top-three finish, the Carson-Newman men's golf team will make the short trek south for the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate.

The Eagles will play in the three-day three-round tournament at the Seviverville Golf Club River Course beginning on Sunday, Mar. 13. Each day will consist of one 18-hole round with a 10 AM shotgun start.

No. 3/6 Carson-Newman is coming off another stellar spring performance, finishing tied for second with host Lander at the Bearcat Golf Classic in Greenwood, S.C. The Eagles shot two-over for the entire tournament, including an even-par round one.

Jonathan Nielsen led the convocation in Greenwood for the second straight tournament. The sophomore out of Hørsholm, Denmark finished third with a three-round score of a six-under 210. Nielsen shot a one-under 71 on the final day from Greenwood, including carding two birdies on the front nine.

Nielsen was ranked as the fifth-best golfer in all of Division-II by Golfstat this week. His third-place finish in the Palmetto State is his third straight top-three finish of the season. He is averaging around one-under for the entire season.

Jake Mynatt also had a solid day in South Carolina. After finishing day one tied for 35th, Mynatt moved up 16 spots on the final day of the tournament thanks to a nice three-under 69 in the third round. Mynatt finished the tournament tied for 19th with a three round two-over 218 score.

Mynatt's 69 was his first under-70 round since the third round of the Queens Fall Invitational. He also carded an eagle on the par-five first hole.

Carson-Newman has had success at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate in the past. Tom Forester holds two of the top-three best individual round scores in the history of the tournament, shooting a 66, six-under in the second round of the 2017 event, and a 65, seven-under in the second round of the 2018 event.

As a team, the Eagles hold the two best single round scores at the tournament, shooting a 13-under 275 in the second round in 2018, and a 14-under 274 second round in 2017. Carson-Newman won the 2017 event championship with a three round score of a 17-under 847, the best three-round team score in tournament history. The Eagles won the 2017 event championship by 25 strokes.

Last season at the event, Mynatt closed out the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate with a career-low 205 that was good enough for second-place while Carson-Newman finished in fourth at the Sevierville Golf Club.

Mynatt was four-under through the final round with back-to-back birdies on the last two holes, sitting in a tie for first with UT Martin's Nick Wolf who still had three holes to play by the time the Eagles entered the clubhouse. His top-spot counterpart birdied the par-3 17th to take the lead. His 205 tied him with former Eagle golfer Jake Headrick for the second-lowest 54-hole score in the event.

The three-day tournament will feature a healthy mix of both ranked Division-II and local Division-I competition. The Carson-Newman women's team will also compete at the event, at the Sevierville Golf Club Highlands Course for the women's bracket.
