Dowsley scores for Eagles in 2-1 loss to Wingate

WINGATE, N.C. – The Carson-Newman Eagles (4-3, 2-1 SAC) men's soccer team fell to the Wingate Bulldogs (5-1, 2-0 SAC) at the WU Soccer Complex on Saturday night.

Sophomore midfielder Joao Pedro Dowsley (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) collected Carson-Newman's lone goal in the match, and he has scored in back-to-back matches for the Eagles.

The loss is Carson-Newman's first in South Atlantic Conference play, and ends a four-match winning streak for the Eagles. Prior to Saturday night's setback, Carson-Newman hadn't lost since a 1-0 defeat to Nova Southeastern on Sept. 1.

Dowsley's goal gave Carson-Newman an early advantage in the match. He scored in the 10th minute mark on an unassisted goal on a line drive from just inside of the box into the corner to put the Eagles on top 1-0.

Wingate answered four minutes later, as Corey McCollum scored on an assist from Gui Andrade to even the score at one.

The teams were tied at halftime 1-1, and in the first period, Wingate outshot Carson-Newman 10-3.

The Bulldogs scored the deciding goal in the 54th minute mark. Once again Andrade provided an assist as Lima scored on a line drive to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 advantage, which would be the final score.

Wingate outshot Carson-Newman 19-7, and the Eagles only put four shots on goal while the Bulldogs put 11 shots on goal during the match.

Carson-Newman goalkeeper Rumwald Le Guevel (Vannes, France) took the loss, allowing two goals while collecting nine saves throughout the match. Wingate goalkeeper Sanjit Kang took the win, collecting three saves while allowing only Dowsley's goal.

Dowsley collected three of the Eagles' four shots on goal in the match, with Emmaunel Aboagye putting across two shots as well.

Carson-Newman will next play on Wednesday Sept. 26 against Tusculum at home on McCown Field at 7:30 p.m. An audio webcast of the match will be available on www.cneagles.com.
