Eagles fight to 1-1 draw at Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, N.C. – The Carson-Newman men's soccer team (6-4-2, 4-1-2 South Atlantic Conference) fought to a double-overtime 1-1 draw against the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears (5-5-3, 2-3-2 South Atlantic Conference) at Irwin Bell Track on Saturday night.

The Eagles trailed 1-0 with just under six minutes left in the second period before forward Sindre Welo (Trondheim, Norway) scored to even the match at one. The goal is the fifth of the season for Welo in his first year playing for Carson-Newman.

This is only the second draw of the season for Carson-Newman, with the last coming on Sept. 26 against Tusculum at McCown Field.

The two teams played to a scoreless first period, with the Eagles outshooting the Bears 10-5.

Lenoir-Rhyne broke the tie with a goal from Tobias Tobrant in the 64th minute mark to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles answered in the 84th minute mark on Welo's goal, as he scored from the left corner with a shot right over the Lenoir-Rhyne goalkeeper Stefan Dill.

At the end of the second period, the match remained a 1-1 deadlock, forcing overtime. In the first two periods, Carson-Newman outshot Lenoir-Rhyne 22-11.

The Eagles would outshoot the Bears in the overtime periods as well, although neither team scored a goal in the two periods, ending the match in a 1-1 draw.

In all, Carson-Newman outshot Lenoir-Rhyne 30-15, with an 8-4 advantage in the two overtime periods.

Carson-Newman goalkeeper Rumwald Le Guevel (Vannes, France) allowed only the one goal while making two saves. Lenoir-Rhyne goalkeeper Stefan Dill allowed only one goal while making 17 saves throughout the match.

In addition to his goal, Welo led the Eagles with 10 shots, five of them on goal. Senior midfielder Taylor Jolley (Morristown, Tenn.) also made five shots on goal and registered six shots throughout the match.

Carson-Newman will next play on Saturday Oct. 20 at home against Anderson. The match begins at 7 p.m. at McCown Field, and live stats will be available on www.cneagles.com.
