JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman men's soccer team has been tabbed for a fourth place finish by the South Atlantic League's coaches in the annual preseason poll. The Eagles garnered 93 votes, five behind third place pick Mars Hill.
Coach Moodie on the preseason poll placement: "We're fine with it, we're excited. I think we've done a good job recruiting and a good job in preseason. We are happy with what we've got and the direction in which we are headed."
Four players from the Carson-Newman men's soccer team were voted to the All-SAC preseason teams.
Starting goal keeper and captain Rumwald Le Gueval and sophomore midfielder Sindre Welo were both named to the preseason All-SAC first team.
Le Gueval was named to the All-SAC first team at the end of the 2012 fall season. He had 71 saves leading to a .800 save percentage. He also generated five shutouts.
Coach Moodie: "Arguably I think he is one of the better goal keepers in the country. He's a fantastic young man with great talent."
Welo earned second team honors last year. He produced three game-winning goals. Welo had the best short percentage on the team at .178 as well as shot on goal percentage at .800.
Junior Joao Dowsley and sophomore Lucas Siqueira made the preseason All-SAC second team. Dowsley played in all 17 games fall 2012 and started 14 of them. He held the second highest goal percentage at .140 while maintaining a .389 shot on goal percentage.
Coach Moodie on Dowsley and Welo's all-conference selections: "We struggled to score goals, but when we did it came through Dowsley and Welo. Those two guys deserve to be on there."
Siqueira scored three goals fall 2012, two of which were game-winners against Brevard and Lenoir-Rhyne in the SAC quarterfinals. Siqueira earned All-SAC honors for 2012 postseason.
Coach Moodie: "Lucas came up big for us last year coming off the back of an injury."
The Eagles kick off the 2013 season against Belmont Abbey on Sep. 5.
