Eagles triumph 2-1 in first game of the season

BELMONT, NC – Carson-Newman (1-0) came out on top after a hard fought battle at Belmont Abbey (0-1) Thursday afternoon.

The Eagles led the Crusaders by two goals at half. The first goal formulated off a corner kick. Senior Matheus Bachi (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) was able to get his head on the ball and place it in the back of the net.

Nick Skoda (Knoxville, Tennessee) sent a dangerously low cross through the box to Marius Staalby (Trondheim, Norway) who was sliding in at back post to put a second goal up on the scoreboard.

The Crusaders came out strong in the second half. They capitalized on a penalty awarded for a handball by Kristian Speake (Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, United Kingdom) to make the final score 2-1.

Coach Moodie on the opening match: "Always a great way to start your season, a win on the road. We played well enough to win, but there's always room for improvement. I'm proud of my players and am looking forward to a home opener with the women tomorrow."

The men have their home opener against Wingate at 7:30 pm on Sept. 14. If 1,000 fans come out to support the Eagles, President Randall O'Brien has agreed to skydive.
