C-N opens home season against no. 1 Wingate on Saturday

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (1-0) kicks off its home season and conference play against 10th-ranked Wingate (2-0) on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m.

Wingate was voted no. 1 in SAC 2013 preseason coaches' poll with 114 points. Midfielder Gui Andrade and defender Victor Tozelli were both named to the All-SAC first team during preseason. Forward Peron de Silva and midfielder Liam Gillesphey made second team.

The Eagles also had four players named to the All-SAC preseason teams. Goalkeeper Rumwald Le Guevel (Vannes, France) and midfielder Sindre Welo (Trondheim, Norway) were voted to the first team. Forward Joao Dowsley (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and midfielder Lucas Siqueira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) made the second team.

Last season, C-N lost 2-1 to Wingate and was outshot 19 to 7. Dowsley scored an unassisted goal for the Eagles with a driven shot just inside the 18-yard box to the left corner of the net. Corey McCollom and Gui Lima scored for the Bulldogs. Both goals were assisted by Andrade.

On Sept. 5, the Eagles opened their season against Belmont Abbey and won 2-1 making it their first opening day win since 2008. Center back Matheus Bachi (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) scored the first goal for C-N with a header off a deflection. Freshman forward Marius Staalby (Trondheim, Norway) put the second point on the scoreboard by deflecting in a cross sent by Nick Skoda (Knoxville, Tenn.). For the first time since 2007, the team now has a chance start the season 2-0.

Before the men kick off, skydivers from Skydive East Tennessee will be landing on the pitch. If 1,000 fans come out to support the men's and the women's (5 p.m.) teams on Saturday, President Randall O'Brien has agreed to skydive within a week of the matches.
