JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (6-4, 3-3 SAC) defeated Newberry (1-10-1, 1-5-1 SAC) 2-1 Wednesday night.
"The boys needed to find a way to win today," Carson-Newman head coach Richard Moodie said, "and I thought that we got it done."
Sindre Welo (Trondheim, Norway) put up the first point for the Eagles in the 8th minute of action off a pass from Nico Noll (Esens, Niedersachsen, Germany) for his third goal of the season.
Five minute into second half, Rurik Pereira (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) sent a long ball into the box. Ross Frame (Welshpool, Powys, United Kingdom) flicked the ball on and Welo headed it into the back of the net for a two-goal lead.
"It's good to see Sindre get on the score sheet," Moodie said. "When you need him, you can count on him. And every good team needs players like that."
Frame leads the Eagles and the conference with 22 points. Kristian Speake (Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, United Kingdom) is second for C-N with 12 while Welo claims third with 10.
In the 72nd minute, Joseph Santos sent a through ball in behind the Eagles' defensive line where Graham Jermstad collected the ball and executed to make the score 2-1.
"It was a great win with great effort," freshman fullback Henrique Costa said. "It was not our best game but, like [Christopher] Trejo said in the locker room, 'the will has to be stronger than the skill.'"
The Eagles outshot the Wolves 16 to 15. Senior captain Rumwald Le Guevel (Vannes, France) had 12 saves on the match.
Welo led the Eagles in shots with six taken and four on net. Speake and Jake Fielder (Talbott, Tenn.) each took three shots and landed two on frame.
Brady Francis released five shots and placed four on goal to lead the Wolves. Jermstad took four shots, all of which were on target.
"It will be a good game for us this Wednesday at home against Milligan," Moodie said, "and hopefully an opportunity for some players to get some playing time."
The Eagles look to play Milligan home Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
