MARS HILL, NC – Carson-Newman (9-4, 5-3 SAC) came out with a 2-1 win over conference opponent Mars Hill (4-9, 4-5 SAC) Saturday night.
"The elements made it difficult," Carson-Newman head soccer coach Richard Moodie said. "It was cold and windy."
Thirty minutes into the game, Mars Hill was rewarded a penalty kick on which Felipe Ferraro capitalized for his third goal of the season to claim the lead.
In the 42nd minute, Duncan Foster (Naphill, High Wycomb, United Kindom) sent a cross into the box for Kristian Speake (Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, United Kingdom) to put in for his sixth goal on the year to send the match into halftime tied with ones.
In the final minute of regular time, Ross Frame (Welshpool, Powys, United Kingdom) and Sindre Welo (Trondheim, Norway) combined in the box before Nico Noll (Esens, Niedersachsen, Germany) received the ball and slotted in the game winner. Noll now has four goals on the season and a total of six points over the last two games.
"Mars Hill worked the ball well, had a good couple of chances and could have won it," Moodie said. "The boys hung around and got two very good goals. It was a much deserved win."
Carson-Newman outshot the Mountain Lions 12 to 11. Ferraro led Mars Hill in shots having taken five, two of which were on frame. Daniel Spurgin released four shots and placed three on net.
Speake led in shots for the Eagles with four taken and two on target.
"We're happy with the results," Moodie said. "It's always good to come in and score goals."
Frame is third in the conference in shots with 55. He is tied for first with 12 goals and leads in assists with nine. He holds the top spot with 33 points, six points above the second place spot.
Senior captain Rumwald Le Guevel (Vannes, France) made three saves. He currently leads the conference in saves with 64 and has now claimed the lead with a save percentage of .800.
"Good teams play bad and lose, but great teams play bad and still find a way to win," Moodie said. "We have two conference wins back to back. Hopefully we can find a way to do the same against Queens."
The Eagles host top-ranked conference adversary Queens for their final home game and senior night Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
