Eagles overcome Lander in penalty kicks to advance to Elite Eight
WINTER PARK, Fla. – Carson-Newman (14-5-1) has advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2005 thanks to a victory over Lander (12-5-2) in a penalty kick shootout Friday evening.
"We are proud to call ourselves Regional Champions," Carson-Newman head soccer coach Richard Moodie said, "and we are really excited to be in the quarterfinals."
After 90 minutes of regular play and two 10 minute overtimes, the match remained scoreless and was sent into a shootout.
The Bearcats proved successful on their second, third and fourth penalty kicks before Rumwald Le Guevel made the game-winning stop to propel C-N to the round of eight.
Senior captain Matheus Bachi (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) stepped up to take the first penalty for the Eagles and confidently placed the ball in the back of the net to tie the score up with ones.
Second up for C-N was Kristian Speake (Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, United Kingdom). Speake sent a shot directly between the sticks beating the keeper who dove to the right.
Nick Skoda (Knoxville, Tenn.) left the keeper no chance when he released a bullet into the upper 90 for Carson-Newman's the third consecutive made penalty.
SAC Player of the Year Ross Frame (Welshpool, Powys, United Kingdom) took the fourth and final shot for the Eagles. He started with a long run up and nailed the ball into the right side of the net.
"We'd like to give a big thank you," Moodie said, "not only to our president for coming to Florida to support us, but to the many more that also made the journey."
The Eagles outshot the Bearcats 20 to 12. Barrett Neilson tallied seven saves on the match.
Senior captain Rumwald Le Guevel (Vannes, France) saved the Bearcats' second and fifth penalty kicks to send his team to the Elite Eight. He was also credited with three saves in regular time.
"It has been a great journey," Moodie said, "and we are excited to represent Carson-Newman again on Sunday."
