Eagles face Rollins in first trip to Elite Eight since 2005

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Carson-Newman (14-5-1) takes on Rollins (17-2) in the quarterfinals of the National Tournament at Barker Family Stadium 1 p.m. Sunday.

On Friday, the Eagles and Lander ended regular time scoreless and proceeded through two overtimes. Still tied with zeros, the match entered a penalty kick shootout.

Matheus Bachi (Caxias do Sul, Brazil), Kristian Speake (Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, United Kingdom), Nick Skoda (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Ross Frame (Welshpool, Powys, United Kingdom) each released a successful penalty shot for C-N.

Senior captain Rumwald Le Guevel (Vannes, France) stopped two of the Bearcats' penalties to send his team to the round of eights for the first time in eight years.

Rollins defeated West Florida 4-1 Friday night.

Walker Hume opened the scoring in the 12th minute of action. In the 55th minute, West Florida tied it up.

Hume scored the winning goal with 15 minutes left in regular time. Grant Blackhurst and Philipp Schad each contributed an unassisted goal in the 83rd and 90th minutes respectively.

Carson-Newman's men's soccer program has never advanced to the Final Four.  The Eagles have made three trips to the national semifinals as a school.  C-N football lost to Grand Valley State in the semis in 2009, while the women's soccer team bowed out in back-to-back Final Four seasons in 2004 and 2005.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. The match can be followed live at http://www.rollinssports.com/ViewArticle.dbmlDB_OEM_ID=19500&ATCLID=207564863.
