C-N drops another close one, 2-1, in overtime to Brevard

BREVARD, N.C. – Alec Goettl's overtime winner in the 100th minute gave the Brevard Tornados a 2-1 victory over the Carson-Newman men's soccer team on Saturday night at Brevard Soccer Field.

For the Eagles, this is their fourth loss their last five games and they now sit at 3-6 in the South Atlantic Conference and 7-8 overall. The Tornados up their record to 7-8-2 and 3-7 in the SAC.

A foul by Carson-Newman set up the play that led to Goettl's clincher. Gabriel Garcia took the free kick and booted the ball into the 18-yard box. Goettl was in the perfect spot on the left side of the box to head it over the line for the score that ended the match.

The Tornados opened the scoring in the 28th minute, jumping ahead 1-0. A cross by Ryan McPhillips into the box found the head of Camilo Sosa and the senior converted the opportunity into his second goal of the season. This makes five straight games the Eagles have conceded the first goal.

Carson-Newman would respond later in the first half. A C-N shot was saved by goalie Heath Turner, but the keeper was unable to secure the ball and Evan Harr (Bristol, Tenn.) was on the spot to bury the rebound and even the score in the 43rd minute. The score was Harr's second of the year and forged a tie that would remain into halftime.

The second half consisted of several opportunities for each team to grab the lead, but no one could take advantage. The Eagles mustered seven shots, two on goal, but Turner saved them both. The team's best chance came in the 80th minute when Marius Staalby (Trondheim, Norway) had a penalty kick, but Turner rejected the volley to keep the score tied. The Tornados put two shots on goal as well, but Aaron Zavolokin (Sydney, Australia), making his first appearance of the year in goal, came up with both saves. With the squads unable to break the deadlock, the game headed to overtime, where Goettl's header proved to be the difference.

The Eagles have two games left, both at McCown Field. The first one is on Tuesday at 7:30pm when Lincoln Memorial pays them a visit. Video of the game will be streamed live on cneagles.com/live with Michael Wottreng providing the call and up-to-the-minute stats will also be available.
