JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Four Eagles found the back of the net in a dominant 5-0 win against Newberry on Saturday in the South Atlantic Conference home opener at McCown Field.
Tom Read got the scoring rampage going for C-N (3-1-1, 1-0-1 SAC), scoring from well behind the 18-yard box in the 23 minute of play. Not long after, he would net another shot with an assist from Ashley Kelynack to put the Eagles up 2-0. That goal gave Read his fourth on the season.
The Wolves fought back for the remainder of the first half, but the second half was all C-N.
Less than five minutes into the second, Kelynack had a goal of his own off of a one-on-one move to get past the Wolves defense.
Zimiso Stewart and Pereira scored goals to seal the deal late in the second half with scores in the 75th and 82nd minute.
"I actually thought first half we didn't connect quite as well as we maybe could have," head coach Stephen Lyons said of his team's performance early on. "We talked about it at halftime and then the boys definitely put in a professional second half and got the result I thought they deserved."
The Eagles led the way in shots on the evening with 11, six of them launching on goal. In a strong defensive showing, they held Newberry (1-2-1, 1-1-0) to just five shots in the victory with just one getting within goal range by Till Neumann.
"I felt confident, especially coming back from Wednesday when we got the clean sheet (at Mars Hill)," Sam Jenkins said of his powerful defensive game. "We want to keep going from there, really, and we got another clean sheet."
The win marked the third clean sheet, second shutout victory for the Eagles on the season as Twan Verweij and Joe Boyd shared time in front of the goal. Verweij would pick up his second win of the season in the victory.
The Eagles extend their series winning streak to 17-games against the Wolves, 23-0-1 overall in the series that dates back to 1995.
