CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Carson-Newman swim team completed the second day of competition in the Bearcats Midseason Invitational on Friday at Keating Aquatics Center on the campus of the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio.
After taking down four program records in the first day of the event, C-N came with a whisker of breaking a few more on Friday.
The team's first standout performance of the night came from Margaret Stansberry (Knoxville, Tenn.), Maggie Melhorn (Knoxville, Tenn.), Elly Culp (West End, N.C.) and Lisa Postma (Leiden, Holland) in the women's 200 medley relay. The quartet completed the race in 1:43.63, just over three-tenths of a second away from Carson-Newman's best time in that race.
In the women's 200 free, Stansberry continued an excellent day. Her time of 1:48.78 was less than two-tenths of a second off the school record.
Not to be outdone, Marcelo Figueiredo (Porto Alegre, Brazil) put forth a great effort in the men's 200 free, nearly breaking the program record in that event. The sophomore clocked in at 1:39.02, seven-hundreths from C-N's record time, which was posted in 2015 by Stephen Parsons.
The final individual event of the evening was the men's 100 breaststroke and Seth Hughes (Kingston, Tenn.) took the opportunity to pick up his team's only victory of the night. He put up a time of 50.00, more than a second better than the closest competitor. The Eagles took three of the top four spots in that event to finish strong.
The Bearcats claimed victory in 13 of the 14 events on Friday night.
The invitational concludes on Saturday, which will also be final day of competition for the Eagles this fall. A recap of the day will be published on cneagles.com afterward.
