Gaffney, S.C. – The Carson-Newman's swim team collected a 157-105 victory over Limestone College in their first dual meet of the season on Saturday afternoon. It is the second win in three years for the Eagles when they face the Saints.
The team notched a first-place finish in 11 of the 14 events on the afternoon, beginning the meet with 11 points in the 200-yard medley relay with a squad of Seth Hughes, Andrei Roman, Ivo Kunzle, and Jonny Goss.
"What a great way to kick off our season," exclaimed Head Coach Jordan Taylor. "Limestone was very strong again on the guys team and they made us work hard for every point."
Junior Marcelo Figueiredo led all swimmers with two individual wins, collecting 9 points apiece for the Eagles in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:51.43) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:51.75).
Figueiredo, a native of Porto Alegre, Brazil, posted the third fastest time in all of D2 so far this year, with his performance in the 1000-yard freestyle.
Carson-Newman had a slew first-place finishers in individual performances which included Hughes, Roman, Charles Casey, Goss, Nikola Tadic, Jon Lancaster, and Caleb Howell.
"Casey had a great swim in the 200-yard butterfly," mentioned Taylor. "That's one of the hardest races there is, and he was in 4th place at the halfway point about 5-6 yards back of the leader. He should be in great spirits and he stepped up yet again!"
The team ended the final even of the day with the squad of Goss, Tadic, Chad Andolsjek, and Lancaster winning the 400-yard freestyle relay at 3:08.93.
The team will have a quick turn around when they travel to Florida for the Nova Invitational next weekend, on Oct. 13 & 14.
