JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – On a busy day at Mossy Creek the Carson-Newman men's and women's swimming teams competed against Lees-McRae College for their second home meet of the season.
After a total of twenty events the women outscored LMC 123.5-26.5 and the men did the same 130-45. Combined the Eagles came out on top with a score of 253.5 to 71.5.
"Overall I was delighted with the team's performance today," Carson-Newman swim coach Jordan Taylor said. "We are coming off the back of the harder few weeks of the season and even though they were all super tired they executed their races well and continued to improve upon times for the season."
Beginning the day, both squads started out with the 200-Yard Medley Relay. The 'B' team for the women consisting of Mary Northcutt, Claudia Carroll, Elly Culp and Iuliia barely beat out their 'A' team with a combined time of 1:51:08 with the 'A' teams' time at 1:52.37 and L-M coming in 3rdwith a time of 1:57.73.
On the men's side of that coin, the men's 'A' team consisting of Ivo Kunzle, Andrei Roman, Jonny Goss and Garrett Graumann clinched the top spot with a time of 1:35.63. LMC came in second in that race with a time of 1:37.95 ahead of the Eagles' 'C' and 'B' teams in third and fourth place.
Throughout the rest of the meet the Bobcats were only able to muster one win out of all the events in the Men's 100-Yard Freestyle. Arsham Mirzaei narrowly finished in front of Seth Hughes with a time of 47.87.
There were a few standout swims among the Eagles such as Matt George winning the Men's 500-Yard Freestyle with a time of 5:26.90. This puts George as the third fastest in Carson-Newman's history and eighth in the country for the year.
Caleb Howell had a spectacular day for the Eagles winning two individual events back-to-back. The junior came in first in the Men's 200-Yard Freestyle and the 400-Yard IM with times of 1:43.00 and 4:14.48. Additionally, Howell anchored the win for the Men's 200-Yard Freestyle Relay just a few minutes later to close out the meet.
On the women's side for stellar swims was Bethany McNabb winning the 200-Yard Breaststroke for the women with a time of 2:31.59. The win marks McNabb's first win as an Eagle with no better time accomplishing the feat than her senior year.
"I'm excited to see the team start to sharpen up and focus," Taylor said. "Our big test is against Tennessee and five other big D1 schools in three weeks' time!"
As Taylor mentioned, the Eagles will hit the road travelling to the University of Tennessee Invitational just up the road in Knoxville. The meet will begin on November 29thand conclude on December 1stto close out 2018.
