Howell sets nation-best time at day one of Emory Invitational

Day 1 Results

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Carson-Newman swim team finished in third place on both the men's and women's sides through the first day of the Emory Invitational in Atlanta, Georgia.

While C-N, ranked 22nd on the men's side and 20th on the women's, trails Emory and Wingate heading into day two, there were many bright spots for the team through the first 18 events of the competition.

One of those bright spots was senior Caleb Howell (Easley, S.C.) emerging victorious from the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:51.61, the best time of any swimmer in all of Division II this season.

"The men's 200 IM was a great race," Carson-Newman coach Jordan Taylor said. "Caleb was really impressive on his breaststroke part of the IM and opened up a good, big lead. His time is good enough for first in the country."

Sophomore Matt George (Manchester, England) finished in second place in the event at 1:54.82.

"This was his first time racing the 200 IM in college," Taylor said. "He put up a second-place finish and a time that's 18th in the country."

Sophomore Andrei Ungur (Romania) took home first place in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:51.96, good enough for 13th in the country.

Improving upon previously set times as the Eagles did today set them up well to move up the national rankings and establish momentum for the team heading into the Tennessee Invitational on Nov. 21st through Nov. 23rd.

For the women, sophomore Meredith Ginn (Ocala, FL) finished in fourth place in the 200 individual medley and in third in the 200-yard backstroke.

"Both were very good times," Taylor said.

Meanwhile, sophomore Yulia Fomina (Russia) and freshman Manon Compagner (Balkbrug, Netherlands) finished fifth and sixth, respectively in the 100-yard freestyle.

Freshman Kailee Morgan (Greenville, S.C.) took home second place in the 100-yard breaststroke at a time of 1:06.64.

The team finishes up the event on Saturday, Nov. 9th at 10 a.m.
