JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman (5-19) men's tennis team was overpowered by King University (12-7) 6-3 in its final match of the regular season.
"We could only manage to get one of the doubles points," Carson-Newman head tennis coach Jean Love said, "and that was a turning point."
Jonathan Allen (Lenoir City, Tenn.) and Garret Duron (Woodstock, Ga.) claimed an important point in doubles play with a 9-7 victory over Seth Carelli and Moritz Poswiat in the no. 3 spot.
"Garret and Jon came from behind," Coach Love said, "to give us the lone point from the doubles."
Duron took a three-setter from William Boyce 5-7, 6-3, 10-8 at no. 6 singles for his fifth consecutive singles point.
Lee Brigato retired his match against Allen at no. 4 singles to add a point for the Eagles.
"We needed to win one of the matches at lines one, two or three," Coach Love said, "to at least give us a chance to win the match in singles. We just could not do it."
Joao Pedro Oliveria (Brazil) fought hard against Pablo Vidal at no. 1 singles, but ultimately fell 7-6 (4-0), 6-0. Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) dropped a close match to Moritz Poswiat in the no. 5 position 7-6, 7-5.
"The guys gave a good effort today, but we just could not string enough points together at crucial times," Coach Love said. "Our opponents played well though, and some of the credit goes to them."
