Eagles fall in season finale 6-3

ATHENS, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman men's tennis team (4-12) were unable to come up with a victory in its final match of the season as they fell to the NAIA's 21st-ranked team, Tennessee Wesleyan (17-2), 6-3 Tuesday afternoon.

"Another tough loss for the guys," coach Jean Love said of her club. "We did not play poorly, but we just struggle to win the big points."

Carson-Newman got off to a rough start in only winning one of the three doubles matches.

The lone victory came from the productive duo of Joao Pedro Oliveira (Brazil) and Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) as they won their No. 3 match 9-7. This was the duo's 11th win of the season.

Things did not improve for the Eagles who were going up against a strong Bulldog squad. Oliveira dropped the opening round match 6-3, 6-2 in two sets. Stefano Daza (Venezuela) then followed with a 6-2, 6-2 loss at No. 2 in two sets as well.

Kevin Mendes (Woodstock, Ga.) fell to his competition in the fourth round matchup, 2-6, 5-1, 6-1. Garret Duron (Woodstock, Ga.) also came up short as he lost 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5.

Carson-Newman's two victories of the day for singles play came from the rackets of Juan Sebastian Perez (Ecuador) and Taylor Barie (Woodstock, Ga.). Perez was a winner in the third-place match, 6-0, 7-5. Barie picked up his second win of the season in a 5-7, 6-2, 10-5 route at No. 6.
