HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- Carson-Newman men's tennis continues to struggle with consistency throughout an entire match as they fall to the Coker Cobras 7-0 in Hartsville, S.C. on Saturday.
"They guys won No. 1 doubles, but weren't close in the other two," Coach Jim Frederick said. "We got leads in singles but couldn't hold them, it's a consistent problem."
Gabriel Dabdab (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Rintaro Oka (Narita, Japan) came out on top at No. 1 doubles against Melwin Krall and Isaac Sturgess 6-2. The following doubles matches struggles on the eagles side as they both finished with the same score. Hernan Toledo (Santiago, Chile) and Jesus Bacete-Sanz (Madrid, Spain) fell to Justus Lehmann and Isaac MacMillan 6-2 while Joey Stiles (New Oxford, Penn.) and Victor Ireno (Sau Paulo, Brazil) dropped their match against Hunter Horton and Pablo Gonzalo Saul 6-2 as well.
Heading into the singles side of competition behind 1-0, the Eagles were unable to even take a singles match into three sets. At No. 1, Toledo fell to Krall 6-4, 6-4 while Dabdab fought in his first set but ultimately fell to Horton at No. 2 7-6, 6-4.
At No. 3, Oka battled against Lehmann but fell 6-3, 6-4 and Marc Bantel (Urbach, Germany) came in for singles play but couldn't get the win against Sturgess and was defeated 6-4, 6-4.
Rounding out the singles competition at the bottom of the lineup, Bacete showed good effort like Dabdab in his first set but couldn't keep up falling 7-5, 6-2 at No. 5. Coming in at No. 6 for the Eagles, Ireno dropped his match to Gonzalo Saul 6-1, 6-3.
