Bacete-Sanz, Dabdab grab singles wins but Eagles fall to the Patriots

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Carson-Newman struggled against the University of the Cumberlands as they fell 5-2 at Mossy Creek Wednesday afternoon. 

The Eagles were unable to get a doubles win out of the three matches and fell behind 1-0 going into singles play. At No. 2, Rintaro Oka (Narita, Japan) and Victor Ireno (Sau Paulo, Brazil) fell to Luis Montull and Aaut Merenheimo 6-2, Gabriel Dabdab (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Hernan Toledo (Santiago, Chile) were defeated by Martin Barbier and Eric Banoub at No. 1 and Joseph Stiles (New Oxford, Penn.) and Daniel Cox (Chattanooga, Tenn.) fell to Jan Dietrick and Anthony Kwok 6-3.

Moving into singles, Marc Bantel (Urbach, Germany) dropped his first set to Banoub 6-1 but fought back in the second taking it to a tiebreaker but ultimately fell 7-6 (7-0) at No. 4. Dabdab went up against Merenheimo and prevailed 6-4, 6-1 to bring the overall score to 2-1 with the Patriots having a slight edge. 

The next two matches were given to the Patriots to decide the match as Ireno fell to Kwok 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 and Oka was defeated by Montull 6-3, 7-5. Toledo went head to head with Barbier at No. 1 but fell 6-4, 6-2 in his efforts. Bacete-Sanz finished out the day for the Eagles at No. 5 defeating Dietrick 6-4, 6-4 giving C-N that second point.
