No. 42 C-N Earns Third Win of the Week, Sweeping Newberry on Senior Day

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Playing its third match this week, No. 42 Carson-Newman (11-5, 9-2 SAC) showed no signs of fatigue, sweeping Newberry (4-14, 3-9 SAC) 7-0 on Senior Day.

"The boys took the doubles point and didn't look back," head coach Jon Parker said. "They really cruised in their singles matches."

Seniors Marnix Van Dalen, Lars Hordijk, Marc Janse, and Joshua Ott were honored after four years with the program, and they earned a proper sendoff with a dominant home win.

The Eagles took all six singles matches, with one coming due to a forfeit in the No. 6 slot. The seniors Van Dalen, Janse, and Hordijk cruised to wins in the No. 1, 2, and 4 positions, respectively. Gjorgji Jankulovski and Paul Gayk earned hard-fought wins at No. 3 and 5, while Matthew Saunders' match was surrendered due to forfeit.

No. 1: Marnix Van Dalen (C-N) def. David Negzaoui (NU), 6-4/6-1

No. 2: Marc Janse (C-N) def. Lucas Mruk (NU), 8-1

No. 3: Gjorgji Jankulovski (C-N) def. Joshua Fritz (NU), 6-3/6-1

No. 4: Lars Hordijk (C-N) def. Thilo Lorenz (NU), 8-3

No. 5: Paul Gayk (C-N) def. Noel Bartz (NU), 6-4/3-6/7-5

No. 6: Matt Saunders (C-N) DNP (Forfeit)

Doubles play was tightly contested between C-N and Newberry, with all matches coming within three games or less, but the Eagles prevailed with three wins to take the point. The preseason all-conference duo of Hordijk and Van Dalen improved to 12-9 and 7-3 in SAC play in the No. 1 slot, while the other two pairings earned closely contested wins to give the Eagles the early point.

With the win, C-N continues to improve on an impressive season under first-year head coach Jon Parker, solidifying itself at 3rd in the South Atlantic Conference. The Eagles will wrap up their regular season on the road on Sunday afternoon at Mars Hill.
