ROCK HILL, S.C. — Carson-Newman freshman forward Shannon Depew (Newport, Tenn.) has been named the South Atlantic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, league officials announced Monday.
Depew wins the award for the first time in her career and becomes the first Lady Eagle to be honored this season.
"Shannon has done well as a freshman for us, especially when you consider the strength of schedule we have had," C-N head coach Dean Walsh said. "It's an honor to be recognized by the conference for her efforts."
Depew led C-N to a 54-50 comeback win over Wingate University last Wednesday. She finished the night with 15 points, seven rebounds, four blocks and two assists.
After being held scoreless in the first half, Depew scored all 15 of her points in the second half to help the Lady Eagles erase a 16-point deficit. She knocked down three crucial shots from behind the arc, including a 3-pointer with three minutes left that gave C-N the lead for good.
Depew is averaging 7.6 points and 7.9 rebounds per game this season and is leading the conference in blocked shots with 25.
The Lady Eagles are 5-5 on the season and 1-1 in the SAC. C-N will return to action in the Rollins Classic in Winter Park, Fla. on Dec. 29.
