JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles basketball team (7-2, 1-1 South Atlantic Conference) picked up a 79-60 victory over the Virginia Intermont Lady Cobras (6-9, 1-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference) at Holt Fieldhouse on Sunday evening.
The Lady Eagles were led by strong three-point shooting from freshman Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) and sophomore Lacy Miller (Dandridge, Tenn.) who both hit four three-pointers apiece and scored in double figures for Carson-Newman.
"Once we started hitting those threes, then some more avenues to get the ball inside to get some layups," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey.
Burstorm scored 16 points to lead Carson-Newman in scoring, the second straight contest for her with 16 points. Miller's 15 points were a career-high from the sophomore, with 12 of the points coming in the second half.
"Lacy can shoot the basketball," said Mincey. "Certainly glad to see her pull the trigger and start shooting the ball and I hope it carries over to conference play."
The first half featured a series of runs for both teams, as the score was tied three times in the half despite Carson-Newman never trailing since the 12:17 mark. The Lady Eagles, led by Shyra Brown's seven first-half points, led at halftime 33-30.
Virginia Intermont opened the second half on a 7-5 run to take a 38-37 lead with 16:55 left to play. The Lady Eagles wouldn't trail again, going on a 16-4 run in the next five minutes to lead 53-42 with 11:38 to go, thanks in large part to three-pointers from Burstrom and Miller.
The Lady Eagles would stretch the lead to as much as 23 points with six minutes left and held on for the 19-point victory, winning 79-60.
Senior Nikki James (Cookeville, Tenn.) came close to a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds coming off the bench for the Lady Eagles. Carson-Newman's bench outscored Virginia Intermont's bench 42-17 in the contest, and the Lady Eagles scored 26 points off of 30 turnovers for the Lady Cobras.
