Bears provide challenge for Lady Eagles

Carson-Newman Women's Basketball Game Notes

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – In a rematch of one of the 2014 SAC Tournament semifinals games, the Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (7-0, 4-0 South Atlantic Conference) host the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears (3-4, 2-2 SAC) Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. at Holt Fieldhouse.

The Lady Eagles ended their 2013-14 season in Greenville, S.C. as the Bears held on to a 75-74 victory. Carson-Newman stayed in the game as a result of going 28-for-41 at the free throw line and holding Lenoir-Rhyne to 39 percent from the floor.

Four different players scored in double figures for Carson-Newman led by 17 points from guard Jai Jai McLaughlin (Knoxville, Tenn.).

The 2014-15 season has flipped the script on the two teams with Carson-Newman a favorite in the league while Lenoir-Rhyne has scuffled through the first month of the season.

The Lady Eagles are the lone undefeated team remaining among South Atlantic Conference while Lenoir-Rhyne sits in the middle of the pack looking for a second scoring option outside of reigning SAC Player of the Year Jazmine Charles.

Carson-Newman earned a victory over the Catawba Indians on Saturday as the Lady Eagles score the fewest and the most points of any half this season in the game. A 51-point second half helped the Lady Eagles overcome an 11-point halftime deficit to earn a 73-65 win. Head coach Mike Mincey's group shot 52 percent from the floor while converting all 15 free throw attempts.

Lenoir-Rhyne enters Wednesday's meeting having won back-to-back games including a 58-50 win at home against Brevard on Saturday. Charles scored 19 points on 7-for-19 shooting and 13 rebounds. Earlier in the week, Charles put up 30 points on 10-for-16 shooting and seven rebounds in a victory over North Georgia.

In the all-time series, Carson-Newman has 41-25 advantage in the 66 previous meetings, but are 2-6 since Mincey became the head coach prior to the 2011-12 season.

In three contests last season, Carson-Newman won on the road, but fell to Lenoir-Rhyne 62-48 at Holt Fieldhouse in a game where the Lady Eagles shot 30 percent from the flooring and went just 1-for-10 from beyond the arc.
