Carson-Newman Women's Basketball Game Notes
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman closes out its nonconference schedule Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m. in Tigerville, S.C. against North Greenville.
The Lady Eagles (5-2) are coming off of a 73-69 loss to South Atlantic Conference opponent Newberry on Saturday despite holding a lead for the majority of the contest.
"We have to regroup," Carson-Newman coach Mike Mincey said. "We still have a good resume. It's just we have given up two winnable games in conference play. It's going to sting for a while. We have to go over to North Greenville and stay together and continue to work towards being the best basketball team we can be."
Carson-Newman leads the all-time series 5-1 with wins of at least 16 points in each of the last three contests.
In a 73-57 at Holt Fieldhouse on Nov. 29, 2014, the Lady Eagles shot 55 percent from the field in the first half while holding the Crusaders to a 25 percent mark from the field in the opening 20 minutes. Forward Jecca Simerly (Talbott, Tenn.) finished with 22 points on 10-for-14 shooting and four rebounds while guard Kailyn Brooks (Lafayette, Tenn.) scored a career-high 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting.
The Crusaders rely on one-on-one play as much as any team in the country ranked 294th out of 300 teams with 49 total assists on the year. Divonnie Powell averages one-third of the team's helpers this year.
Conversely, North Greenville has been excellent at not turning the basketball over to the tune of 73 total turnovers in seven games, 15th-fewest in the nation.
The Crusaders are averaging 8.8 made three-pointers on the year, the 15th-highest in the nation this year while converting at a rate of 36.4 percent, 39th nationally.
Sophomore guard Cameron Carter average 7.6 points per game in 2014-15 but has averaged 21 points per night this year, 11th in the nation. She has recorded nights with 27 points at North Georgia on Nov. 13th and 31 at Emmanuel (Ga.) on Dec. 1st this season. Her 52 percent shooting from beyond the three-point arc ranks 10th in the country.
Carson-Newman is 17th in the nation this year in three-point percentage making 39.8 percent of its triples on the year. The Crusaders are yielding a 30.2 percent conversion rate by opponents on the year.
