CHARLOTTE, N.C. – At the 4:37 mark of the first quarter senior guard Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) converted her second three-pointer of the game and 223rd of her career to move into the top spot on the program's all-time three-pointers made list passing Ashley Tipton's mark set from 2005-09 in a 72-50 victory over Queens (N.C.) at Curry Arena Saturday afternoon.
The senior now has 226 career made three-pointers ranking fifth on the South Atlantic Conference's all-time list as Burstrom eyes the fourth spot held by Presbyterian's Jill Neumann of 248. She finished the day with 16 points on 6 of 10 shooting from the floor.
"I'm pleased with the win, but not pleased with how we played at times," Carson-Newman coach Mike Mincey said. "We played okay in the first and third quarters, but the second and fourth quarters we weren't very good offensively.
"I'm extremely proud of what Tatum has accomplished by taking Ashley Tipton's spot making the most three-point field goals in the history of the program. This is as much of a team award as it is an individual. Lots of passes and screens have been set for Tatum and everyone has set for Tatum everyone that has played with her during these four years can enjoy this record breaking day. After the type of year Tatum had as a freshman, coach Tipton and I talked often about the probability of Tatum breaking her record and I'm I was able to see her do it this early in her senior season."
Carson-Newman (7-2, 1-2 SAC) began the contest on a 17-4 run spanning to the 3:39 mark of the first quarter. The two sides shared baskets the rest of the frame seeing the score go to 26-13 in the opening stanza. Eight different players scored for the Lady Eagles in the opening 10 minutes.
An 11-2 run by the Lady Eagles closed out the first half to give Carson-Newman its largest lead of the first 20 minutes at 40-20. Junior guard Kailyn Brooks (Lafayette, Tenn.) tallied eight points on 3 of 5 shooting while three players had six points.
Queens (2-7, 0-4 SAC) was held to 28 percent shooting, 7-for-25, as McKell Oliverio went 4-for-5 from the floor and had eight points for the Royals.
The Royals went 3-for-13 from the floor in the third quarter as the Lady Eagles outscored 23-13 to balloon the lead to 63-33 heading into the fourth quarter. Carson-Newman started the second half on a 10-2 run capped on a layup by Burstrom.
Carson-Newman led 70-33, its largest lead of the night, with 7:55 remaining before the Royals closed the night on a 17-2 run to get the game's final margin.
The Lady Eagles made at least 10 three-pointers as a team for the third time this season going 11-for-25, 44 percent, for the game.
With 14 steals, Carson-Newman forced 22 turnovers which it turned into 28 points at the other end of the floor.
Queens did outrebound Carson-Newman 48-38, but shot 31 percent, 16-for-52, while going 3-for-12 from the three-point arc.
Brooks finished with 13 points with four rebounds and four assists while senior forward Taylor Peterson (Mount Juliet, Tenn.) ended the game with 13 points. 10 players scored at least two points on the night.
Queens was led by 17 points, six rebounds and four assists from Sheridan Pressley and 12 points and five rebounds from Oliverio. Outside of that duo, the Royals went 6-for-29 from the floor on the day.
