Carson-Newman Women's Basketball Game Notes
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The final game of the 2015-16 regular season pits Carson-Newman and Coker at the DeLoach Center Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
Carson-Newman (17-10, 11-10 South Atlantic Conference) is currently the No. 7 seed in the upcoming conference tournament with the only movement that could occur being that the Lady Eagles move to sixth with a win and a loss by Lincoln Memorial at home against Catawba.
"We want to compete," Carson-Newman coach Mike Mincey said. "We know we have a quarterfinal game next Wednesday. Anytime you are going into competition you want to win. You want to finish with a good record and honestly as crazy as our league and region is you don't want to give up a game because the way teams at the bottom of the top-10 perform you could slide in going into Wednesday's game."
The seventh meeting between Carson-Newman and Coker (9-18, 8-13 SAC) is slated for Saturday as C-N holds a 4-2 advantage looking for the second season sweep against the Cobras. The last time the Lady Eagles took both games during the 2013-14 season including the last win for C-N at Coker on Nov. 23, 2013, a 71-63 decision.
In the first meeting this season Coker went 12:08 of action between the second and third quarters without a point while Carson-Newman went on a 29-0 run in an 88-49 win.
The 39-point margin of victory is the most against a South Atlantic Conference team since a 50-point drubbing of Brevard on Jan. 20, 2010, 114-64, and the largest differential in a win since a 40-point win over Erskine, 85-45, on Nov. 10, 2012.
Coker failed to have a player score in double figures in the contest as it's the first time a Carson-Newman opponent failed to have a player in double digits since Livingstone on Nov. 25, 2006 in a 76-46 C-N win.
The Cobras enter Saturday riding a four-game losing streak, the second-longest string of the season for Coker who lost eight consecutive outings from Dec. 30 to Jan. 27. After winning their first four games of SAC play, the Cobras have dropped 13 of their last 17.
Turnovers continue to plague Coker as it ranks last in the conference and 277th at the Division II level by averaging 20.1 giveaways per night. During the four-game losing streak, the Cobras have turned the ball over 22 times on three occasions with a 30-turnover night.
Coker is ranked 11th out of 12 SAC teams in scoring defense giving up 71.4 points per game while ranking 10th in field-goal percentage defense yielding a 42-percent clip.
College of Charleston transfer Jazz Green continues to be the team's leader ranking fifth in the league in scoring average at 15.2 points per game while ranking 20th in the nation with 13 double-doubles on the year and 18th with 71 steals.
