Wester cleans up weekly honors from SAC and TSWA

ROCK HILL, S.C. – After leading Carson-Newman to a 2-0 start on the year, Mika Wester was named the South Atlantic Conference and Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week Tuesday afternoon.

The Newport, Tenn. native earns her second weekly honor from the SAC picking up the plaudit on Jan. 23, 2017 while TSWA honors the junior for the first time in her career.

The all-region selection from 2016-17 is the first Lady Eagle to win multiple Player of the Week honors from the conference in her career since Zoriah Williams was picked twice during the 2011-12 season.

Wester averaged 25.0 points per game per game in the first weekend making 58 percent of her shots from the field and going three-for-six from long distance. The first-team All-SAC selection racked up 12 caroms, nine assists, two blocks and a steal.

In a 36-point blowout win at USC Aiken to open the year, Wester led all players in scoring in the game with 22 points on nine-for-15 shooting as she chipped in eight rebounds and four assists.

Helping the Lady Eagles beat 15th-ranked Lander on Saturday, the forward racked up 28 points with five assists and four rebounds going 10-for-18 from field.

With the season barely a week old, Wester is 11th in the country in points per game and atop the league. She is one of seven players in the SAC to make every free-throw attempt on the year and one of three to go nine-for-nine to top the category.

Of players to attempt at least 30 shots on the year, nine players have a higher field-goal percentage than Wester's 58 percent margin.

Her streak of two 20-point outings in-a-row is the fifth time over the last two years than she has posted 20 or more points in at least two affairs in succession. Wester registered a career-high four straight outings from Nov. 16-30, 2016 when she averaged 24 points per game.

Carson-Newman is gearing up for a road trip against King (Tenn.) Wednesday night at 6 p.m. As always the Eagle Sports Network will be in attendance to provide audio coverage on Mountain Country 106.3 (WPFT-FM, Sevierville) and cneagles.com/live starting at 5:45 p.m.
