Wester reels in second Astroturf SAC Player of the Week

ROCK HILL, S.C. – For the second time this year and third time in her career, Mika Wester was named the Astroturf South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week announced by the league Tuesday morning.

Wester won the first plaudit of the year from the conference and with three from Haris Price (Gatlinburg, Tenn.), Carson-Newman has won five of the 14 weekly honors. It is the most since Tusculum picked up five as a club during the 2010-11 season.

"We always talk to each other on how we want to be like the dynamic duo," Wester stated. "We just want to dominate this league. With her healthy and everybody back to normal I think that we can continue to improve."

The week was filled with Wester cross the 1,000-point mark. Against Tusculum in a 100-79 win, the Newport, Tenn. finished the game with 27 points in the game going 10-for-18 from the field and adding seven assists and six rebounds. With the 27 points she scored as a rookie at Western Carolina, it pushed her into the four-digit club for her overall career and brought the junior to 989 points as a Lady Eagle.

Three days later, she became the 20th player in C-N history to score 1,000 points in her Orange and Blue career with a jumper from the left elbow in the second quarter. The junior led all players with 20 points going 9-for-14 from the field with six rebounds and three assists. She is 13 points shy of displacing Kay Carter's 1,022 points for 19th on the program's scoring list.

On the season, the forward ranks third in the league in scoring at 17.3 points per game with 25 double-digit scoring outputs. Wester is 16th in Division II with 186 made field goals ranking third in the SAC with a 53-percent field-goal percentage.

She is fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.62, sixth in total blocks with 29 and sixth in total assists with 97 on the year.

Wester and the Lady Eagles seek an opportunity to clinch a share of the SAC regular season championship Wednesday evening at Lincoln Memorial. Broadcast coverage from the Eagle Sports Network starts at 5:45 for the 6 p.m. tip-off on 106.3 (WPFT-FM, Sevierville) and cneagles.com/live.
