Eagles finish tied for fifth at Smokey Mountain Intercollegiate
SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman women’s golf team finished the Sunday’s final round of the Smokey Mountain Intercollegiate tied for fifth-place after falling three spots from its second-place standing Saturday. The Eagles shot a combined 321 during the final round.

Freshman Elizabeth England (Oakland, Tenn.) and junior Kelli Pemberton (Knoxville, Tenn.) shot the Eagles' low scores of 79 Sunday, while senior Danielle Baiunco led the team during the tournament with a combined score of 155.
"I experienced out there they were just flat. They had a lot of energy out on the golf course yesterday and they were raring to go I think the first one. And for some reason, today, we were just a little flat. It almost looked like they were trying too hard, taking it a little bit too serious," coach Suzanne Strudwick said of her team's round.
Over the course of the entire tournament, Pemberton led the field on par-3 scoring, averaging 2.75 strokes per hole and finishing two-under on par-3s. On par-4 scoring, Baiunco finished eighth in the field, averaging 4.2 strokes per par-4 and England tied for 13th.
"I just stay focused and I hit just one shot at a time and I tried to not worry about my score or anything else," England said about her performance at the tournament.
Lee University won the SMI team competition with a combined score of 611. West Florida University and Savannah College of Art and Design rounded out the top-three in the team competition.
Individually, Mount Olive's Julie Loennchen was the top medalist, finishing the tournament at two-under 142.
Carson-Newman's next competition will be on September 15th and 16th in the Rollins Invitational in Southern Pines, N.C.
