ELGIN, S.C. – In the second round of the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships South Super Regional, Elizabeth England (Oakland, Tenn.) sliced two shots off her first round score, shooting a six-over 78 to move up two spots into a tie for 25th on Tuesday at The Members Club at Woodcreek in Elgin, S.C.
"I'm happy my score today was lower than yesterday's," said England, "but I still feel I should've done better. Tomorrow, I just need to focus on playing one hole at a time and try to put up the lowest score I can."
For the second consecutive morning, the Oakland native started on the back nine, but stumbled on the par-3 12th, recording her first triple bogey of the tournament. After a bogey on the 16th, she reached the halfway mark at four-over. On the front nine, England was able to find her stroke for a while, carding consecutive birdies on the third and fourth, but Mossy Creek's lone representative in the competition ran into more trouble as she was closing out the round. Double bogeys on the seventh and ninth put her two-over on the front nine and 14-over through 36 holes.
"I was really happy with how Elizabeth played," said coach Suzanne Strudwick. "She hasn't been hitting the ball well, but she's grinding and fighting through it. You're not going to be at your best every time out. A lot of time has gone by since the conference championships and it's hard to stay sharp. The fact that she's not had her best stuff and is still holding her own is important."
Marie Coors of St. Leo jumped from third into sole possession of first place, posting a score of one-over on Tuesday for an overall mark of four-over. She has a one shot edge on Lynn's Krissy Ortiz and Barry's Charlotte Putz, who are sharing second. Three competitors, Franziska Bremm of West Georgia, Elaine Wood of Montevallo and Kiira Riihijarvi of Tampa are tied for fourth, two strokes off the lead.
Barry University, the school that entered the event as Golfstat's top-ranked team, will carry a four shot lead into day three following a 16-over 304. Four shots off the pace is No. 6 St. Leo and No. 5 Nova Southeastern is seven behind. At 46-over and in fourth is No. 14 Lee University and No. 3 Rollins College is at 47-over. The top three teams, as well as the top three individuals, will move on the NCAA Championships in Findlay, Ohio.
