C-N remains at seventh through day two of SAC Championship

ELGIN, S.C. – A two-shot total improvement helped Carson-Newman stay at seventh-place after round two at the South Atlantic Conference Women's Golf Championship on Monday.

As a team, the Eagles were +40 on the day with a 328 total. They now sit at 82-over par heading into the final day of competition. C-N was tied for the best Par 3 shooting team and total birdies with Wingate on Monday holding a 3.30 clip on such holes along with six total birdies. The team was the also best Par 5 shooting team at +9.

"Better today, attitudes were more intense and focused," head coach Suzanne Strudwick said. "Just struggling with confidence on greens and judging approach shots."

Elizabeth England (Oakland, Tenn.) still leads C-N on the leaderboard despite shooting four strokes higher in the second round, moving down in a tie for 9th. The senior was 10-over par on Monday thanks to +5 showings in the front and back nine. Five of her eight bogeys on the day came in the front half of the course before a double bogey added onto the trio she had carded in the later round.

England was the only Eagle to shoot higher from the first to second rounds.

Anna Davenport (Roswell, Ga.) was the lowest scoring Eagle in the second day at eight-over par for an 80. She now sits in a tie for 11th through Monday, just one stroke behind England with a nine-spot move up the leaderboard. Monday saw the junior shoot one shot better than her opening round score as she carded an 80. She was +6 in the first nine holes courtesy of a trio of bogeys with a triple bogey on the seventh hole. The back nine were better for Davenport with a pair of birdes double bogeys, giving her a two-over showing in the afternoon.

She was the best Par 3 shooting player in the field at two-under on such holes and was tie for the top spot on Par 5s with an even 5.00 clip.

"Anna again was strong," Strudwick mentioned. "Elizabeth played well until the last couple of holes."

Shooting three strokes lower than Sunday, Jayla Sims (Hixson, Tenn.) was nine-over on Monday with a round of 81, good enough to move up for a tie at 22nd heading into the final day of the championship. The freshman was the only Eagle to shoot a birdie in the front nine, carding a trio of them before the turn, helping to salvage the four bogeys and one double bogey she shot in the same frame. The back nine was tougher on Sims as she shot for bogey four times along with a double bogey.

Her three birdies tied for the most in the field on Monday.

One shot behind Fletcher sits Reagan Kinnie (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) who was one stroke better in the second round with a +14 score of 86, good enough for a tie at 41st showing through Monday. She shot mirrored seven-over scores on both halves of the course with six bogeys and a trio of double bogeys total.

Allie Fletcher (Cumming, Ga.) closed out the second day at 13-over, shaving four shots off of her Sunday score to move to a tie for 44th on the leaderboard with an 85. The junior was nine-over in the front nine alone with five bogeys and a pair of double bogeys. She shot a +4 back half thanks to a pair of bogeys, a triple bogey and one birdie.

No. 15 Wingate still sits at the top of the leaderboard with a +52 score of 628 through 36 holes. Anderson and Tusculum are tie for second at +71 with a 647.

Queens' Cameryn Smith and Wingate's Warissa Puangcharoen are still in the lead at ten-over. Tusculum's Cydney Murrell and Anderson's Kate Hill are tied for third, one stroke out of the lead.

The final round of the championship will tee off Tuesday morning. Live scoring will be updated every three holes from the Members Club at Woodcreek.
