ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Despite shooting four shots higher in the second round, Carson-Newman was still able to maintain its tie for second place position with a 38-over total of 614 by the end of the Spring Kickoff Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
The finish gives the Eagles a program-record fourth-consecutive top three result of the season.
"Difficult wind gusts today made it rough," Carson-Newman coach Suzanne Strudwick said. "I'm proud of my team for battling hard to get a decent score. We have plenty to work on before Hilton Head in 10 days.
"There may be a change-up in the starting lineup to figure out where everyone is after Christmas break and how well-prepared for our championship season we are. Hopefully the weather will cooperate the next couple of days to get some meaningful practice in."
C-N was 21-over in the final round of play, concluding the tournament as the top par-3 shooting team with a 3.15 scoring average and tying for the most even par holes at 109 with Lincoln Memorial.
After a career outing on Monday, Rachel Watts (Newport, Tenn.) was seven shots higher in the second round with a five-over score of 77, giving her a sixth place finish with a 147 total for her new lowest 36-hole score at Carson-Newman. The junior carded five bogeys in the final round, moving her par total to 27 through 36 holes, tying for the most in the field.
Also shooting 27 par shots in the field was Maeve Cummins (Waringstown, Northern Ireland), finishing two strokes behind Watts in a tie for seventh. The freshman started her day by shooting even with par through the front nine with a pair of birdies and bogeys. She accompanied that with three more bogeys in the back half of the course to go three-over for a 149 total.
Reagan Kinnie (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) made a five-stroke bounce back on Tuesday with a five-over performance in the final round to give her a +15 score of 159, good enough for a share of 26th. The junior shot five bogeys on Tuesday with four of those happening exclusively on par 4 holes.
Like Kinnie, Jayla Sims (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) made a five-shot improvement on Tuesday with an eight-over round of 80, placing her in a tie for 41st on the leaderboard. She shot a double bogey on her first hole of the day before making birdie on the next hole. From there, she shot seven bogeys on her way to a 21-over total at 165.
Taylor Hayes (Lake Ozark, Mo.) shot a career-high round with a 16-over score of 88. The senior's day was plagued by nine bogeys, two double bogeys and a triple bogey on the final hole of the day. Her second round score was nine shots higher than what she carded on Monday, giving her a share of 46th with a +23 total of 167.
No. 13 Lynn stayed at the top of the leaderboard with a steep 20-stroke lead at 18-over with a 594 total. Tied with C-N at second was Lincoln Memorial after the Railsplitters shot 16-over on Tuesday.
Lynn's Helen Kreuzer was the top player in the field at two-under with a 142. One stroke separated first, second and third with Lincoln Memorial's Lise Malherbe and Krissy Ortiz shooting 143 and 144, respectively.
The next tournament for the Eagles comes in a week and a half at the Battle of Hilton Head. That tournament at Hilton Head Island, S.C. will take place on Feb. 25 and 26.
