WALLACE, N.C. – No. 25 Carson-Newman matched the second-lowest team round score in South Atlantic Conference history by firing a 292 in the second round of the Sunoco Campbell Oil Classic, helping it to land in second-place at 15-over by the end of Monday at the River Landing Golf Club.
The 292 ties the Tusculum squad that fired the score at the Tusculum Fall Classic on Sept. 27, 2016. It is also one-shot off of the conference record set by Tusculum in 2012 at 291. Before today, the best round C-N had shot in team history was a 295 at the Elite Linen Service Invitational on Sept. 12, 2009.
"Awesome first day of work," Carson-Newman coach Suzanne Strudwick said. "I'm very proud of the team. We've worked really hard to get to this point. We need to keep it going for tomorrow's round."
The Eagles opened the day with their third-best single round score of the season with a 299 for second-place, landing them 10-shots out of first. For the first time this season, the entire C-N team shot within the 70s for a round, doing so twice in one day.

Jayla Sims (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) notched the best 36-hole score of her career on Monday with a 145, landing her in fifth-place at one-over. The sophomore had the lowest round of the entire team in the morning with an even 72, matching her lowest round score of the season. She was one-shot higher in the afternoon round, carding a one-over 73.
Maeve Cummins (Waringstown, Northern Ireland) saw a four-shot improvement from the first to second rounds to sit one-shot behind Sims in a tie for sixth with a 146. The freshman fired a three-over round of 75 to start the event before shooting a one-under 71 in the second, the lowest score among C-N participants through the entire first day. The 71 marks her lowest round score this season while tying her best 36-hole score of the year, too.
Reagan Kinnie (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) shot a 148 on Monday to sit in a tie for ninth-place. Like Cummins, she opened her day with a 75 in the opening round. The junior shaved two shots off in the afternoon portion of the day with a 73 to sit at four-over.
In the field as an individual, Matilda Frövenholt (Öjersjö, Sweden) also had a career day, shooting her best 36-hole score with a 150 to sit in a tie for 15th at six-over. The sophomore was three-over in both rounds of play with back-to-back 75 scores, the lowest single-round score of her career. She sits at the highest spot on the leaderboard among all individuals in the field.
Three shots behind her is Rachel Watts (Newport, Tenn.), tied for 23rd with a nine-over total of 153. Her day began with a 77 in the morning round before going one-shot lower in the second round with a 76.
Also in the tie for 23rd in Taylor Hayes (Lake Ozark, Mo.). The senior was seven-over in the first round with a 78 before taking three shots off of her score in the afternoon with a 75 to go nine-over on Monday.
The Eagles head into the final round just nine-shots out of the lead held by hosting UNC Pembroke which holds a 582 through two rounds. Wingate sits two shots behind C-N at third-place with a 593.
UNC Pembroke's Katy Flax leads the field through two rounds with a three-under 141. Kaley Barts of Catawba and Krystal Knight of Merrimack are tied for second with a one-under total of 143.
The tournament concludes on Tuesday following a single round of action beginning at 8:30 a.m. Carson-Newman will begin hitting the links at 9:26 a.m. as Frovenholt tees off before the team starts its round beginning at 9:58 a.m. Check back to cneagles.com for a full recap and results from the round.
