Eagles show life but can't find a goal in scoreless tie with Brevard

BREVARD, N.C. – The Carson-Newman women's soccer team set a new season-high with 55 shots and earned their ninth shutout of the season, but were unable to get on the scoresheet, leading to a 0-0 tie with the Brevard Tornados at Brevard Soccer Field on Saturday evening.

The tie is the first of the season for the Eagles, putting their record at 6-2-1 in the South Atlantic Conference and 11-3-1 overall. Brevard owns a mark of 5-11-2 and they are 0-9-1 in league play.

C-N dominated the play in the first half, suffocating Brevard's offense and not allowing a single shot. The Eagles managed to create plenty of chances, but were unable to convert any of them into scores. They totaled 18 shots, but none of them were good enough to beat goalkeeper Laurel Neuzil. The freshman made six saves in the half and kept her team even going into the locker room.

In the second half, Carson-Newman continued trying to break through, but Brevard's defense held fast. The Eagles sent in 25 shots, eight of them on goal. Despite this effort, Neuzil and her back line continued to keep their team in the game. The goalkeeper saved all eight shots during the final 45 minutes of regulation.

In overtime, C-N kept trying to force the action and collect a goal, as they were credited with 12 shots during the two extra periods, six of them on net. Neuzil continued making saves, however, piling up 20, a new career high, to go with her second career shutout.

Brevard's offense was non-existent for most of the match, as they failed to tally a single shot until the 109th minute. Goalkeeper Jacqueline Burns (Cookstown, Northern Ireland) only had to make one save to maintain a clean sheet, her ninth of the season. Burns is only one more shutout away from breaking the C-N record for the most in a season, which currently stands at 9.9, set last year by Jessica Fraiture (Hebron, Ky.).

The 55 shots the Eagles took in this contest represent the most they've had in a game since they totaled 61 against Chowan in 2011. Julianne Herrity's (Donegal, Ireland) 16 shots on the day are most for a C-N player since Trenna Howell had 17 in that same contest against Chowan.

The second-to-last game of the regular season for the Eagles is on Tuesday when they play host to Lincoln Memorial at 5pm at McCown Field. The match will be broadcast live on cneagles.com/live with Mark Inserra on the call and live stats wil also be available. After full-time, visit cneagles.com for a complete recap.
