JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Part three of a three-part series previewing the second-ranked Carson-Newman women's soccer program focuses on the last line of defense in goal for the upcoming 2018 campaign.
Goalkeeper Jackie Burns (Cookstown, Northern Ireland) enters her junior year with already one of the most prestigious careers in the program's history. Burns earned first-team preseason all-conference honors in 2017, poised to follow up a stellar sophomore campaign. She added a conference accolade to close out the season after being named All-SAC second-team. Burns was a huge part in the Eagles school record of recording ix straight shutouts from Oct. 7 to Oct. 31.
The Northern Ireland native started in all 23 games for Carson-Newman which included 11 solo shutouts on the year. Burns holds the all-time record for shutouts in a career during the D2 era with 25.3, and has still two years left to build on the resume. She is already the career-leader in shutouts in women's soccer history. The net minder grabbed First-team USC All-Region honors and second-team All-Region from D2CCA.
Burns stopped 80 shots on the year allowing just 10 goals for a save % of .889 and a goals-against average of .44, all while recording 2037 minutes of playing time which was second on the team. She allowed just two goals in regulation during the five-game NCAA Tournament run. C-N outscored opponents 72-12 on the year adding to Burns total of the all-time winningest goalkeeper in program history with 37 wins.
"She is an incredible human being first and foremost," Goalkeeper Coach Matt Carr mentioned. "Jackie is a tremendous athlete obviously playing for her country. She brings a lot of experience, mobility and leadership."
The team returns Jessica Fraiture (Hebron, Ky.) who has missed the last two seasons due to injury. The junior goalkeeper started in all 22 games as a freshman setting a school record at the time with 19 wins and 10 clean sheets. She recorded all 10 of those shutouts in the final 15 matches of the year which included a clean sheet in the SAC Championship to help the Eagles to the conference title. She was also a member of the SAC Women's Soccer Championship All-Tournament team.
Fraiture had the second-lowest goals against average in school history with a 0.86 average during that 2015 season, conceding just 19 goals in 1977 minutes.
Jasmine Rizk (Andersonville, Tenn.) enters her junior season with the Eagles appearing in five games during the regular season. Rizk helped preserve three shutouts for the Eagles when relieving starter Jackie Burns.
"It's a great group with the three of them," Carr explained. "There is already a tremendous environment as far as the way they interact and push each other in training and even the way they interact off the field. I'm looking to set the bar a little bit higher and create an even more competitive environment."
