Softball remains fourth in SAC-laden region rankings

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Carson-Newman softball held steady, occupying the fourth spot in the Southeast Region rankings for the second week of  the NCAA's poll that will eventually determine the field off team's that make the NCAA tournament.

C-N is one of five South Atlantic Conference teams in the Southeast Region rankings, and is the highest ranked among that group of five.

The top eight teams in the final region ranking make the NCAA tournament.  Conference tournament champions from the SAC, Peach Belt and Conference Carolinas can also receive autobids to the tournament, potentially taking the place of one of the bottom-ranked teams.

This scenario is likely to play out this year with no schools from Conference Carolinas ranked in the top 10.

Carson-Newman is trying to make its first NCAA tournament since 2011.

The top four from the initial region rankings remain unchanged.  Peach Belt schools occupy the first three spots. North Georgia is first, Georgia College second, and GRU Augusta is third.

The Eagles remain in fourth with Armstrong Atlantic moving up a spot to fifth.  The Pirates swap places with Anderson – the SAC's runners-up from the regular season.

Catawba – unranked in the first region poll – vaults into seventh.  Wingate climbs from ninth to eighth.  Lenoir-Rhyne fell two spots to ninth, while Young Harris also dropped two spots to 10th.

The Eagles  will try to improve upon its region standing with participation in the SAC tournament starting Thursday in Hartsville, S.C. at 3:30 p.m. against Coker.
