Eagles fall to sixth in latest region rankings

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Carson-Newman softball fell two spots to sixth in the latest region rankings after dropping two of its three games over the weekend at the South Atlantic Conference championships.

C-N, the SAC's regular season titlist, is one of five SAC teams in the Southeast Region rankings, and is the third-highest ranked among that group of five.

The top eight teams in the final region ranking make the NCAA tournament.  Conference tournament champions from the SAC, Peach Belt and Conference Carolinas can also receive autobids to the tournament.

Because Limestone won the Conference Carolinas tournament, it is likely that only the top seven ranked teams in the region will advance to NCAA tournament play.

The top three from the initial region rankings remain unchanged.  Peach Belt schools occupy the first three spots. North Georgia, the Peach Belt's tournament champion is first, Georgia College second, and GRU Augusta is third.

Catawba, the SAC's tournament champion vaulted to fourth from seventh place. The Indians were unranked in the first region poll, but have won eight straight to move into the top half of the rankings.

Anderson moved up a spot to fifth after reaching championship Sunday in the SAC tournament.  Fifth is where the Trojans started when the first region rankings came out three weeks ago.

Armstrong Atlantic fell two spots to seventh after the Pirates fell to Georgia College in the Peach Belt semifinals.

Young Harris moved back up two spots to eighth – where the Mountain Lions started in the first region rankings.

Wingate and Lenoir-Rhyne both sit on the outside looking in in ninth and 10th, respectively.

Carson-Newman will find out its NCAA tournament fate Monday morning at 10 a.m. with NCAA.com's broadcast of the Division II softball selection show.
