Softball jumps to sixth in region rankings

INDIANAPOLIS – Carson-Newman softball has jumped to sixth in the Southeast Region rankings after winning the South Atlantic Conference tournament championship on April 28.

The Eagles had been in 10th in the first two iterations of the rankings, but sewed up a spot in the NCAA tournament by virtue of winning the tournament crown.

The rankings offer a bit of a preview of what's to come ahead of Monday's NCAA selection show at 10 a.m.

As it stands, the Eagles would be headed to Hickory, N.C. to play No. 3 Georgia College in a regional hosted by No. 2 Lenoir-Rhyne.  No. 7 Young Harris would round out that regional and face the Bears in the opening round of tournament.

Most play in the Southeast Region has concluded. Carson-Newman won the South Atlantic Conference tournament championship while King scored upsets in the Conference Carolinas tournament to likely bounce North Greenville and Limestone from tournament contention.

The Peach Belt will play its single-elimination conference starting Friday May 4.  There is potential for movement on that side.  Young Harris has the potential to move up in the region rankings with possible games looming with Georgia College and top-ranked North Georgia.

The Nighthawks are in line to host the other side of the regional, which lines up to feature SAC foes Queens and Coker, plus Conference Carolinas tournament champion King.

Carson-Newman will find out its ultimate NCAA tournament fate Monday at 10 a.m.
