VIDEO: Nancy Claire Smith from Oxford
AUSTIN, Texas - Carson-Newman women's swimmer Nancy Claire Smith (Franklin, Tenn.) has been named to the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II At-Large second team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Wednesday at noon.
Smith becomes Carson-Newman's first ever female selection to the at-large team, which includes athletes who participate in swimming, golf, lacrosse, ice hockey, tennis, bowling, field hockey, rifle, gymnastics and water polo.
She carries a flawless 4.0 GPA.
Men's tennis player Preston Sneed made the men's third team in the at-large program in 2007.
Smith becomes Carson-Newman's 22nd Academic All-American, and joins softball player Elayna Siebert as athletes honored by the organization this academic year.
Smith was an All-American in the 800 Free Relay and earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 200 Free Relay.
She won Carson-Newman's first-ever Elite 90 Award at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships for having the highest GPA at the championship site.
Smith reset the school record as a member of the 800 Free Relay with a time of 7:25.29.
The Franklin, Tenn.-native won three events during her junior season, the 200 Breast against the University of the Cumberlands, as well as the 400 Free and 400 Free Relay against King and Emory & Henry.
