CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Carson-Newman swim team has completed the preliminary swims on Friday morning in day two of the Bearcats Midseason Invitational at the Keating Aquatics Center on the campus of the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio.
"This morning was a job well done," coach Jordan Taylor said. "We set up some great finals tonight. Everyone will be back tonight in finals and we're ready to step up."
The Eagles carried the momentum from a fantastic Wednesday showing into an impressive performance on Friday morning. C-N grabbed the top spot in the men's 200 free relay with a time of 1.33.00, outdoing two Cincinnati relay teams.
In the men's 100 fly, Pijus MacKevicius (Kaunas, Lithuania) reached the national B qualifying standard by hitting the wall at 49.26. That time will place him in the running for a spot at nationals in March. A national A qualifying time automatically gives a swimmer a spot in the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships. If there are not enough A times to fill every spot at nationals, the field is filled out by swimmers who posted a national B time.
One race later, it was Margaret Stansberry (Knoxville, Tenn.) putting up a national B qualifying time in the 200 freestyle, when she hit the wall at 1:52.40. Marcelo Figueiredo (Porto Alegre, Brazil) followed that up with a qualifying time of his own in the men's 200 free, finishing that race in 1:40.26.
C-N got one more B qualifying time from Maggie Melhorn (Knoxville, Tenn.) in the 100 breaststroke, as the junior's 1:03.37 put her in the running for a place at nationals as well.
In the final men's individual event of the morning, sophomore Seth Hughes (Kingston, Tenn.) claimed first place in 100 backstroke with a time of 49.89.
The second day of competition in the Keating Aquatics Center will conclude tonight with the first race starting at 6 p.m. Results and a write-up of the night will be posted on cneagles.com.
