School record seven women's swimmers haul in CSCAA Scholar All-America honors

PHILADELPHIA - A school-record seven Carson-Newman wommen's swimmers are among a record 997 swimmers and divers to receive recognition as members of the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America team.   

Margaret Stansberry, Nancy Claire Smith, Lisa Postma, Elly Culp and Maggie Melhorn all repeat as recipients of the accolade, while Lexy Raybon and Mary Northcutt grab the honor for the first time. 

The selections recognize students that have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have participated in their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

In addition to the 997 first-team selections, 954 students were named as Honorable Mention selections.  These students have similarly achieved a GPA of 3.50 and achieved a "B" time standard or competed at a regional or zone qualifying meet.

Stansberry picked up her fourth career All-American award as part of the 200 Free Relay. She was an Honorable Mention All-American in three other events: the 800 Free Relay, 100 Free and 400 Free Relay. Stansberry was an All-BMC swimmer in five races, including the 100 free, where she broke the school record. Her other all-conference accolades came in the 200, 400 and 800 Free Relays and the 400 Medley Relay. She set a new program record in the 200 I.M. and helped C-N break school records in the 400 medley relay and 200 free relay.

Smith wrapped up her senior season with back-to-back Academic All-America honors from CoSIDA. She was an Honorable Mention All-American in the 800 free relay.  That 800 free relay team also finished third at the BMC Championships, which earned her an all-conference selection. She also finished in the top eight in the 400 individual medley at the BMC Championships.

Postmas was an All-American and two-time Honorable Mention All-American. She was part of C-N 200 free relay team that earned All-American recognition; also gained Honorable Mention status in the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay. Postma was named all-conference in the 200 and 400 free relays and the 200 and 400 medley relays.

Culp was also an All-American as part of 200 free relay team. She earned All-Bluegrass Mountain conference honors in four races: the 100 Fly, 400 Free, 400 Free Relay and 200 Medley Relay.

Melhorn was a four-time Honorable Mention All-American. She earned the honor in the 200 medley relay, 100 breaststroke, 800 free relay and the 200 breaststroke. Her time of 2:13.66 in the "B" final of the 200 breaststroke not only broke a program record, but was faster than the time of all but two participants in the event's "A" final. Melhorn also broke the school record in the 100 breaststroke and the 100 I.M. She helped break a school record in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:46.78 during her team's tri-meet in Cincinnati. Melhorn garnered All-BMC recognition in six events: 200 breaststroke, 200 medley relay, 800 free relay, 200 I.M., 400 medley relay and 100 breaststroke.

Raybon was an All-American in the 200 fly. She garnered Honorable Mention All-American honors in the 400 free relay. Raybon was Named All-BMC in the 200 fly, 1000 free and 800 free relay. She set a new school record in the 200 fly at nationals with a time of 2:02.09.

Northcutt was an All-American as part of the women's 200 free relay team, posting the eighth fastest time in the country. That free relay quartet took in Cincinnati and set a new school record with a time of 1:33.27. She was named all-conference in the 50 free and as a member of the 400 free relay and 200 free relay teams at the BMC Championships.
