JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman swim team holds top-five positions in the national rankings for both the men's and women's teams, following the first poll of the year from CollegeSwimming.com.

The women's team checks in at No. 3 in the rankings, while the men hold the No. 4 spot. Both teams were ranked inside the top-ten last season when the women were 10th-ranked nationally and the men were sixth in the same poll.

On the men's side, Wingate rounds out the top-five while Indianapolis and Nova Southeastern sit third and second respectively. Each of the teams competed in the NSU Shark Invitational over the week, in which the Eagles collected a third-place finish. Three of the top six individual swimmers in the invitational were from Carson-Newman: Marcelo Figueiredo, Caleb Howell, and Jon Lancaster.

The women only trail Nova Southeastern (2nd) and Queens University of Charlotte (1st) in the team rankings. C-N faced four of the top-ten teams in the Shark Invitational over the weekend, earning second-place after two days of events. Senior Maggie Melhorn collected the most points as an individual receiving a first-place finish.

Both teams also collected wins in their first dual meet of 2017 when they traveled to Gaffney, S.C. to take on Limestone just over two weeks ago.

"I am really pleased with the rankings, it's still early in the season but it highlights our depth and just how well we have started the season," Head Coach Jordan Taylor stated. "Still a long way to go but we are putting ourselves in the place we want to and deserve to be."

The next event for the swim teams comes on Nov. 3 & 4, in the form of a Tri-Meet between Wingate and Emory in Atlanta, Ga.
