GREENSBORO, N.C. – Heading into the evening of day two of the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships, Carson-Newman found themselves in Championship Finals in a pair of events.
After successful preliminary swims in the 200 freestyle relay and 200 freestyle in which the Eagles broke school records in both events, C-N looked to add to their 2018 All-America resume.
Margaret Stansberry claimed fourth-place in the 200 freestyle final with a time of 1:48.07, after earning the top spot in the event earlier in the day. The finish still gave the senior native out of Knoxville, Tenn. an All-America honor, her third this week and seventh of her C-N career.
It's also her second All-America finish in the 200 free, one-upping her sophomore performance in which she finished fifth.
The collection of Lisa Postma, Elly Culp, Mary Northcutt and Stansberry got things started in the evening with a 5th-place finish and All-America honors in the 200 freestyle relay collecting a new school record for the second time today at 1:32.47, shaving off .51 seconds from the morning record.
CJ Jensen earned her first honorable mention All-America honor as a freshman after a first-place finish in the consolation final for the 400 yard individual medley. Her time of 4:25.09 marked a new school record in the event, a mark that the Copenhagen, Denmark native broke just seven hours prior at 4:26.75.
It's already the third time this week that C-N has broken school records in the same event twice in a day.
"It's been a big couple days for us," Coach Jordan Taylor said. "With us getting off to a great start it set an expectation and we're just trying to keep the momentum going."
Maggie Melhorn, Postma, Culp and Stansberry all collected honorable mention All-America for C-N swim in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:45.26 and a fourth-place finish. The time narrowly missed a school record which was set by the same group during prelims.
Preliminary swims for day three of events at the Greensboro Aquatic Center is scheduled for a 10:00 start Friday morning.
The C-N women sit in sixth-overall as a team out of 37 with 106 points so far this week.
"For us the big thing is we keep brushing up on our morning swims but we just perform better at night," Taylor added. "They're really excited with getting themselves ready for it. It's something we've worked on and its just a normal mentality for them."
